Fatou Bensouda, Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court

Ms. Bensouda, who hails from The Gambia and is only the second to serve in her role at the ICC, announced in a 2016 policy document that atrocities that destroy the environment would be given a new degree of prioritization.  This announcement does not change the law but instead reorients a portion of the ICC’s focus on crimes involving “the destruction of the environment, the illegal exploitation of natural resources or the illegal dispossession of land.”  Read more.
